Blog Feature- All Things Thrifty

Good Morning!

First off, I just want to wish you all a Merry Christmas! I hope next year will also be filled with many exciting adventures and blessings!

Now on to today's blog feature. Today I decided to do All Things Thrifty Here are my reasons why.
I discovered this site about a year and a half ago from a friend. I was taken back by how thrifty she was with her designs. She was actually the reason why I decided to go into furniture upholstery after I finished school because she made it look so easy to do. I've learned a lot along the way and so that reason, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have found this site and how it has changed my life.
Here are some of my favorite post of hers.

#1 Glazing 101

I love learning new tricks on how to make furniture look different. It's one of my favorite techniques!

#2 Reupholstery 101

#3 Tufted ottoman

After I saw this post I wanted to find something like this one. After searching high and low I decided to build a oversize ottoman, which I will be showing on Monday!

Anyway, this is the reason why I love this site and I'm grateful that I found it. Thanks Brooke for inspiring me!

Changing old finds!

I just want to start out by saying that I Love Nate Berkus!!! He's always had such great style and diy ideas. If you haven't started watching The Nate Berkus show I would start now! Anyway, I was watching his show on Wednesday and I loved his idea about re purposing frames. See below

Isn't that such a great idea? I'm going to see if I can find a great frame to do something like that with and show you what I come up with.
He also has a section that you can check out for tips and tools and see how he changes things up. Have fun!

Great Budget friendly places to shop for fabric

When I starting out in school learning about fabric and color, I was introduced to a variety of great fabric manufactures such as Robert Allen, Duralee, Kravet just to name a few. When thinking of price per yard at one of these stores it can get pretty expensive. So to get the best for your buck I've come together with a few of my favorite fabric stores for home decor.

#1. Hancock Fabric

I love Hancock fabric because they have a great selection at decent prices, you can also get online coupons and get a bigger discount on your favorite fabric. Lately, that's the only way I can afford fabric is by using a coupon. Here are some of my favorite fabric.

#2 Joann's Fabric

I love Joann's fabric for the same reason as Hancock. Price is reasonable and coupons are great to have. One difference between Joann's and Hancock is when it comes to purchasing high density foam. (if you are are making chair seats or upholstery) At Joann's you can buy it by the yard where as at Hancock you can't at least at the store. If anyone knows different let me know. Maybe it depends on the store. Here are some favorite fabric.

I'm sure you are seeing a pattern right now of what my favorite colors and style is. :) I like other colors but these are just my favorite!

#3. Home Fabrics

I actually have not been to this store since the closest store is in Las Vegas but I've heard nothing but good things about this place, especially their closeouts where you can get fabric at $1 a yard. Can't beat that! :) If I ever adventure down that way and find some fabric I'll be writing about it! :)

#4. Fabric.com

I used this site when I found some great fabric for my daughters Chest. Great costs and great selection!

If you have any other great sites or fabric stores you like please share!

Branching Out!

Last year, when I was going to school for Interior Design I loved looking at all the different styles of furniture and decor and wondered if I had it in me to recreate something. Now the time has come to spread my wings and start making custom furniture. Here is the other reason why. Growing up, I came from a family that consisted with a dad who is a contractor and was influenced by home design, a brother who got into building Cabinets for a living and was surrounded by different types of wood and smells. I feel like one way or another, I've always had it in me to build something or design something.
Anyways, So I decided to start out small. I am going to build an ottoman! Hard? I guess we will see!
So here is the fun part, when I am finished I would like to do a special giveaway and give the ottoman to whoever wins. Sound like a plan? Alright!!!! lets get started!

Here are some simple ideas for an ottoman, stay tuned to see what I come up with!

Boat Seat Cushions

These boat seats were quite the challenge with the top of the seats and the fasteners but I managed and I like the results! In case you were wondering, the material is vinyl and I was able to sew just fine with a regular sewing machine. The only thing that I had to do manually were the top covers (just putting together) everything else worked fine. Just an FYI if you ever wonder if it is possible to sew vinyl using a regular sewing machine. On the other hand, I would love a heavy duty sewing machine, so if anyone wants to give me one. :)

"Home Made" Christmas

I know this doesn't involve furniture but wanted to share with you all some of my crafting skills. I have a four year old daughter that loves everything Ballet! I think that's the only thing she dresses up in. :)
So for Christmas I decided I would make her some tutu's. So I bought all of the material which came to maybe $10 and went to work and this is what I came up with. Let me know what you think!

Great How To Videos

When I started learning how to upholster and paint furniture I pretty much had to teach my self and I wish I had found this website months ago because I know this would of helped answer questions I had and help with some of the mistakes I've made learning. If you are interested in learning I would watch and check out this website DIY Upholstery Supply

Seat Cushions

These were done for a client that needed new seat covers and cushions. The original foam were 1" - 1 1/2" and wanted something more comfortable, so I went with a 2" foam. I love the results and they are super comfortable to sit on. Let me know what you think!

P.s. One is missing because I'm still working on it.

Second Side Table

Here is the Second side table. I had some issues with the top and then everything finally clicked and I was able to finish. Here is the before and after.

Need some opinions!

I just got done making this pillow for my chair that I'm trying to sell. My question is this, Should I keep the pillow this size or should I go smaller?
I like it this size because it give some balance to the big chair. Anyway, comments about my pillow would be great!

Esspresso color Coffee Table

Here is the coffee table to the previous post! Did the same thing as previous. Can't wait to get pictures of it at her home.

Side Table

This project is for a client of mine that has two side tables and wanted a change. She noticed on my blog that I've done projects with the glazing technique and also the distressed look. So we did the best of both and this is what I came up with.

So if you can see on the after photos I did a black glaze to give it some character and then distress the edges & legs. Comments would be wonderful. Stay tuned for the coffee table that matches.

Coffee Table with drawers

I love this item! I've been wanting something like this for sometime. Now it might not be quite what I wanted but it works for the price I got. I paid $25 at a thrift store and then add the paint and knobs and it was about $45 total. Not too bad! Here are the before and after

Book Case

Here is my most recent project!

Before

For this project I decided to try the fabric for the backing, so I took the backing off which was not very easy and then attached the fabric and stapled it to the back and then reattached. I love the simple black and white color.

What do you think???
